Dalarnians,

Today, we are unveilling our plans for restoring full functionality to Mines of Dalarnia on BNB Chain, while also outlining our future intention to migrate to Arbitrum Nova.

The team recently chose Arbitrum Nova as our target chain and were preparing an announcement outlining our migration roadmap. However, we have encountered a roadblock to completing this process that is beyond our control. While we anticipate that this roadblock will be resolved, we cannot know for sure how long it will take.

For this reason, we have made the decision to bring the full MoD experience back to BNB Chain on an interim basis, with the intention of migrating at a later date.

As part of the restoration, we will be significantly refactoring our smart contracts to improve both performance and security. These improved contracts will undergo external security audits, and we estimate that the entire process will take approximately five weeks.

Completing these above steps will achieve several important goals:

  • Restoring full functionality for our players as soon as possible
  • Improving the underlying architecture of the game
  • Expediting the migration process once the current blockers are removed

To summarize, we will relaunch on BNB Chain after making improvements, and then migrate to Arbitrum Nova in the future. Continue reading for more details about this process, as well as our rationale for choosing Arbitrum Nova.

Migration Plan:

As migration is still a top priority for us in order to improve the user experience, we want to announce our plans in this regard. After evaluating our options at the moment of writing, the most promising candidate is Arbitrum Nova as it best meets the criteria for our project. Factors we took into consideration were:

Security

The target network must be a blockchain that has demonstrated a secure production environment, with established auditing processes and bridging solutions.

Transaction Costs

The target network must offer significantly lower transaction fees. Arbitrum Nova will decrease gas fees by ~90% for the average player and ~95% for our most active players when compared to Binance Smart Chain.

EVM Compatibility

Using an EVM compatible network will cut down on the time and resources related to development and expedite the migration process.

Ease of Bridging with Ethereum and BSC

DAR is at the core of Mines of Dalarnia’s game economy and proven bridging solutions are needed to allow our players to migrate their tokens from Ethereum and BSC safely and conveniently.

Other Networks Considered

Polygon and Gnosis were among the mainnet ready networks that we looked into. Each of these options had their strong points, but certain factors led to our decision to go with Arbitrum Nova:

Polygon: While Polygon is an established network with great technology, the zkEVM update that would allow us to operate MoD in the way we want is not mainnet ready at this time.

Gnosis: Another great blockchain and outstanding team that we have been in touch with. While we are very interested in keeping an eye on this network, their current focus is not on GameFi resulting in some features missing that would allow us to migrate smoothly.

Chromia: In addition to the above, we also discussed our next steps with our friends at Chromia. We are very excited about their latest testnet updates and will stay in touch with them to track the progress of their mainnet launch.

Migration Roadmap

Phase 1 Audits

Starting from now we will review and improve our new contracts and have them audited. We estimate that this will take 2–3 weeks to complete.

Phase 2 Deployment to BSC Testnet

We’ll run our game on the testnet network. We will need your help to check out whether everything is working correctly. This step may take 2–3 weeks.

Phase 3 Deployment to BSC Mainnet

At this point we will be ready to integrate crafting, mining, and land management back into game. We estimate that this process will be complete by July 15th.

Phase 4 Migration to Arbitrum Nova

Once the roadblocks to Arbitrum Nova are resolved, we will announce the timeline for migration. As explained earlier, the steps we will complete in Phase 1–3 will expedite the migration process. Reducing gas fees for our players is a high priority for us, and we know how important it is for the project to grow.

Next Steps

We are also working on general quality of life improvements and are in discussions with third parties and our advisors to deliver significant improvements to our overall user experience.

Despite our intense focus on migration, part of our team is working on new game features and updates which we will share news about soon.

We are also evaluating the potential of using distinct chains for asset ownership and game logic at some point in the future. While this approach has some notable advantages, it is a complex undertaking and is still in the ideation phase.

Additional Note

While having to adapt our plans on short notice is not an ideal situation, we are confident that the plans outlined above are the best path forward for the community and the project. Our team remains committed to bringing back all our blockchain based features, while also delivering an enjoyable and secure gaming experience with low gas fees and high scalability.
