Mines of Dalarnia Beginner’s Guide: The Importance of Upgrades
Today, we will be reviewing the importance of performing upgrades on your equipment in the Mines of Dalarnia world. Below, there is a screenshot displaying the upgrade UI. Let’s discuss the different pieces of equipment and what a player can gain through upgrading them.
Pickaxe
Your trusty pickaxe will be your most used in game item and is also the most important to upgrade. As you progress to higher level plots, blocks cannot be broken without a pickaxe of a sufficient grade level. If you enter a plot you cannot fully mine due to your pickaxe grade, you will see this message:
When you see this message, you may be able to break some of the blocks in this plot but you will find areas you cannot explore. In some cases, your pickaxe will not be able to break any of the blocks and you will simply be stuck in the starting area. To unlock the entire plot, you must upgrade your pickaxe to a high enough grade.
Backpack
Your backpack is what allows you to collect resources as you mine plots. By upgrading your backpack, you will gain extra item slots and also be able to carry more of each type of mineral in each slot.
Boots
Upgrading your boots makes your character swifter. You will increase how high you can jump, as well as significantly improving the length of your jump.
Health
Health is exactly what you would think! By upgrading your health, you will be able to sustain more damage from both monster and environmental hazards.
Oxygen
Your oxygen tank is used to determine how long you can last in Terra and Toxic zones. As your oxygen is upgraded, you will be able to explore longer and reach deeper into mines — which will become increasingly important as plot difficulty increases and you search for powerful and rare resources.
Heat Sink
Your heat sink unit performs the same function as your oxygen tank, but is used in Volcanic zones.
Antifreeze
Your antifreeze unit performs the same function as your oxygen tank, but is used in Arctic zones.
Canar-E
Your Canar-E is your trusty companion, providing you with extra insights into the dangers and treasures around you. As you upgrade your Canar-E, you will unlock various new perks that will make your explorations safer and more rewarding.
Drill
Your drill is a secondary tool that can be used to great effect in the right situations against both enemies as a means of excavating faster. As you upgrade your drill, it will become more effective, last longer, and use less energy.
Bomb
Bombs are a secondary tool that can be used to break hard to reach blocks and attack monsters. In some situations, bombs will be the only effective tool. Upgrading your bombs will increase both their effectiveness and the size of your available arsenal.
Finding the Correct Materials for Upgrades
As your equipment improves, you will need to find increasingly rarer and more valuable materials to upgrade them. Here are a few pointers to consider when looking for just the right resources:
- You can filter plots available for sale or rent by the resources they contain
- By choosing plots that are at the correct difficulty level for your character and most importantly your pickaxe, you can ensure that you will be able to mine the entire plot
- In general, the upgrade system is designed to guide you towards plots that are the correct difficulty level for your character
- If you are having difficulty acquiring resources to perform a specific upgrade, it may be a sign that you should work on leveling up some of your underpowered gear to give you the competitive advantage
