They’re all dead! By the Great Ape, this planet is a death trap!
I am foreman for Lietzau Corp’s 5307th Composite Unit. My team blew out a new shaft under our plot in the West Flood Mountains. I was up in the skiff as always, running coms and watching the team’s Canar-E cams.
The team broke into a natural cavern. Saganite crystals were glowing off in the distance, but most of the chamber was shrouded in darkness. We’ve learned to be watchful for crevasses in rooms like this, so everyone started moving at half-pace, checking their steps.
The first sign of trouble came from Nyland. She asked the unit to stop and adjust their lights. She swore something had moved ahead. I asked her Canar-E to scan the environment, but it came back clean. I advised they move on. How can I ever forgive myself?
Everything happened so fast. Something snorted. Everyone heard it and froze. A pair of yellow orbs flashed in Henry’s BirdCam. Suddenly Nyland was screaming. A huge thing, like a hog, smashed into her, dragging her away into the dark. Everyone started to run.
I tried to guide them back to the shaft, but it was chaos. They didn’t have any weapons! Henry tried to hit one of the things with his pick but the safety tripped and the damn thing retracted! Defenseless. It wasn’t long until all the coms went quiet.
I could still see through their Canar-Es. They showed only darkness, except one. The bird was broken and lying on the ground, silently recording a pale shape. I think it was a hand.
We were told this planet was safe, that there was no sentient life. We were told this was a utopia. Something’s wrong with the capsules!
The mines need to be shut down immediately! Everyone needs to leave, now!
